Onvo L60 Black Knight: The “Dark” Edition That Nio Hid For 666 Units And Now Releases To Save Falling Sales

ONVO L60 BLACK KNIGHT returns without unit limitation after a 26% drop in sales. Find out why Nio changed strategy.

Nio has just done something few luxury brands would dare: admit it needs to sell more. Its sub-brand Onvo — created specifically to win over upper-middle-class families in China — has relaunched the L60 Black Knight edition without the 666-unit limit that made it an object of desire in December. The move reveals an uncomfortable truth: even with cutting-edge technology, the Chinese electric car war is far from won.

Why the “Black Knight” Returned Without Limits

In December 2024, Onvo artificially created scarcity by producing only 666 units of the L60 Black Knight. The marketing strategy worked — for a while. But February 2025 brought some cold numbers: 2,981 deliveries, a 26.38% year-over-year drop and 14.36% decline compared to January. The Chinese New Year holiday doesn’t explain everything.

The brand’s response came via Weibo on Tuesday: the Black Knight edition is now regular production. The price remains at 211,900 yuan (US$ 30,790) for full purchase, or 154,900 yuan through the BaaS (Battery as a Service) program, where the 60 kWh battery is rented separately.

The 5,000 yuan difference over the standard L60 buys an aesthetic package that previously cost 11,200 yuan: exclusive black paint, darkened emblems, 20-inch black wheels, black leather interior with orange stitching and seat belts — a touch reminiscent of the chromatic details of the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door, but for a fraction of the price.

Technical Sheet: What US$ 30,000 Buys in China

The L60 Black Knight is not just makeup. Under the body of a mid-size SUV, the configuration drives the rear wheels with 240 kW (326 hp) and 305 Nm of torque — enough to compete with the Volkswagen ID. Unyx 08 in the European market, if it ever arrives there.

CLTC Range530 km
Maximum Power240 kW (326 hp)
Peak Torque305 Nm

The range of 530 km in the Chinese CLTC cycle — more generous than the European WLTP or American EPA — will translate to somewhere between 400-450 km in real conditions. Still, the value positions Onvo as a serious alternative to the aggressive price of BYD and even to Tesla’s entry-level models.

The March Battle: Subsidies and Interest to Survive

Aware that aesthetics alone do not sell, Onvo launched a commercial offensive for March: purchase tax subsidy of up to 10,262 yuan, financing plan over 7 years with minimal rates, and down payment starting from 30,000 yuan (about US$ 4,360).

The math is brutal. With a minimum down payment and BaaS, a Chinese consumer can take home an L60 Black Knight paying less than the price of a Chevrolet Bolt in the US — and still swap the battery for a larger one whenever they want, without losing vehicle value.

Nio’s strategy with Onvo has always been clear: to use the parent company’s battery swap infrastructure to sell in volume where the premium brand doesn’t reach. The L60, launched in September 2024, is the first product of this bet. However, the drop in sales in February shows that competition from XPeng, Li Auto, and BYD is not sleeping.

Looking ahead, Onvo is already preparing the L90 — a larger SUV with LiDAR and a higher price — for the second quarter of 2025. But if the Black Knight edition proves that artificial scarcity is a luxury the brand can no longer afford, we could see more “special editions” becoming the norm. In the Chinese EV market, survival is more important than exclusivity.
