Volkswagen ID. Unyx 08 Challenges Chinese Brands with Technology Europeans Will Never Have

VOLKSWAGEN ID. UNYX 08 joins forces with Xpeng to create a cinema cockpit and advanced AI. Find out why this model shocked the market.

Volkswagen has just crossed a line that few traditional automakers dare to draw. The new ID. Unyx 08 is not just another electric vehicle from the German brand — it is a statement that the company’s future depends on understanding that a car cannot be the same everywhere in the world. And this time, the bet is so bold that not even the VW emblem on the hood will be enough to make you recognize which factory it came from.

Why China Demands Cars That No European Would Understand

The divide between what the West and the East expect from a car has never been so evident. While Europeans still clamor for physical buttons and tactile durability, the Chinese consumer has shifted to a completely different paradigm: voice-controlled vehicles, smart cockpits, and immersive digital experiences.

Volkswagen itself confirmed this dichotomy. According to the brand, Chinese buyers prioritize “vehicles with AI first, connected, with perfect voice control, and smart cockpits.” The result? The ID. Unyx 08 is born with almost no conventional buttons on the center console.

The Interior That Looks Like a Cinema Room on Wheels

Open the door of the ID. Unyx 08 and you will find two 14.96-inch 2.4K resolution screens dominating the dashboard. For reference, this surpasses most professional laptops on the market. The setup is complemented by a 10.25-inch instrument cluster, also designed to protrude from the dashboard in an aesthetic that resembles a digital art installation more than a car cockpit.

The equipment list sounds like a premium electronics store catalog:

  • Panoramic glass roof of 1.74 m² with 10 opacity levels controllable by voice or touch
  • Dual wireless charging for smartphones
  • Folding tables for rear passengers
  • Sound system with 20 speakers
  • Leather seats with 10-way electric adjustment

Interestingly, VW kept physical controls on the steering wheel and doors — a concession to safety that even the most tech enthusiasts appreciate.

The Partnership Behind the Visual Revolution

The ID. Unyx 08 is not Volkswagen’s only child. It was born from the joint venture Volkswagen Anhui, co-developed with Xpeng, one of China’s most aggressive electric vehicle startups. The collaboration explains both the radical design and the technological architecture — after all, when you can’t beat the digital natives, the smartest strategy is to learn directly from them.

Do not confuse this model with the ID. Era 9X, another electric SUV recently launched. That one comes from the partnership with SAIC and still features a combustion engine as a range extender. The Unyx 08 is 100% electric, pure and simple.

Specifications That Defy European Logic

SpecificationValue
Length5,000 mm (196.9 in)
Wheelbase3,030 mm (119.2 in)
Loading capacity (folded seats)1,845 liters (65.1 cubic feet)
Maximum range (CLTC)730 km (454 miles)
Battery options82 kWh or 95 kWh
Motor configurationsFront-wheel drive or AWD

The 730 km CLTC cycle range deserves a disclaimer: this Chinese standard is notoriously more generous than the European WLTP or American EPA. In practice, expect something between 500-550 km in real conditions — still competitive for the segment.

The Price of the Global Strategy

Volkswagen is not just adapting existing models with stretched wheelbases, as it did for decades. The company is building genuinely localized products — and paying a price for it. The group’s electric vehicle sales plummeted 44% in 2025 in China, forcing the launch of more than 20 new EVs and plug-in hybrids just this year.

The ID. Unyx 08 represents a calculated bet: if the German brand cannot beat BYD on price or Zeekr on pure technology, it can at least offer an experience that feels local — even if that means visually abandoning everything that made it recognizable.

The model will reach Chinese stores in the coming weeks. For the rest of the world, it remains a curiosity — or a warning of what may come when digital preferences finally also conquer Western markets.
